Clive Owen is great in the lead role and proves that voice over can work very well hard to imagine the film without it. The film is somewhere between a thriller and a drama.

Croupier watches more like a mystery, keeping the viewer in wonder as to how it is going to turn out. Overall, the film is very well put together and a solid recommendation.

Robert B Super Reviewer. Feb 21, Unconventional story - almost a head-scratcher to follow - that's plagued, unfortunately, by a low budget and a strange lack of reaction by the protagonist when someone close to him dies.

Solid contemporary noir, though, that sets up a few narrative frames: Jack is a writer who works as a croupier, writing a novel about Jake, a croupier Striking, original film that does a lot with a little and features a good performance by a young Clive Owen.

Roll the dice on it [rimshot goes here]! Daniel P Super Reviewer. Nov 29, Clive Owen is a marvel, and to watch him work his mesmerizing.

It is about gambling, yes, and a heist does occur somewhere in the film, but don't go expecting "Ocean's Eleven" or "The Good Thief.

Stephen E Super Reviewer. Nov 16, It's a shame that Clive Owen isn't out in good movies anymore. His role here in Croupier, as the existential card dealer, is magnificent.

Croupier is directed by Mike Hodges, who, like Guy Ritchie, typically stays in the same genre of film. There is some fine direction here, and the cinematography is marvelous.

Such smooth camera movement like I've never seen before. Certainly, Croupier is not a film for everyone. It is a lot like another English film, Intermission, where the plot doesn't really take off until about any hour in, and that plot disappears within fifteen minutes.

Edit Did You Know? Goofs When Jack has a job interview at the London casino his father recommends him for, the manager Mr. Reynolds at one stage asks him the current count at the Blackjack table.

Jack insists it is -9, the manager insists it is -8 to which Jack confides smugly to himself "It had taken him 45 minutes but Jack now had Mr.

The world turned 'round him leaving him miraculously untouched. The croupier had reached his goal. He no longer heard the sound of the ball.

User Reviews A good film but not as satisfying as I would have liked 24 May by bob the moo — See all my reviews.

When a late-night knock at the door comes, Jack assumes it to be the casino robbers demanding the return of their advance money.

Instead, it is a policeman, who informs him that Marion has been killed in an apparent hit-and-run. Jack finishes his book and gets it published anonymously.

It is a big success, but he doesn't change anything about his life, continuing to work as a croupier and live in his basement flat, not even buying the new car he wanted.

Jack goes on with his life and gets another call, this one from Jani, who congratulates him on playing his part in the attempted robbery and implies that she benefited significantly.

Then she puts his father on the phone, and he implies that he set up the croupier job for Jack in order to arrange for the attempted robbery, and he benefited as well.

Croupier received a muted response upon its initial release in Britain. The website's critical consensus reads, "The writer slumming for human truths and real experience is a common enough story, but this cool-headed and slick thriller provides a gut-churningly compelling backdrop to a look at our darker sides.

Critic Roger Ebert gave the film three stars, remarking that the point of the film was not the plot, but the atmosphere and characterization.

He also lauded the realistic depiction of the casino itself. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article needs additional citations for verification.
