Tasted three times. Tasted blind. One of the first positively interesting noses for a while. Then a very dry finish.
Owner Bernard Magrez has made serious investments here since the late 's and recent vintages have been outstanding thanks to extremely low yields, labour-intensive sorting of grapes and modern wine-making techniques.
Quality bears no relation to the weedy wines of the early 's and before. Deep purple colour. Black fruits on the nose with mulberry and exotic spice with a smoky toasty character.
The palate is rich and intense with black cherry, blackcurrant and roasted coffee. Opulent but iwth mouthfilling ripe tannins to give structure.
This is a big, muscular style with an impressive concentration of ripe black fruit. Lavish in profile, this sports a range of warm fruitcake, anise and black tea aromatics followed quickly by a gush of raspberry, plum and boysenberry confiture notes.
Velvety, showing ample structure through the finish, pulling the fruit and wood notes together. A rare bird, stylistically, in this generally understated vintage.
Best from through The nose has a mix of fragrances quite fresh and black fruits feature on the palate. Fresh at the start but richer and sweeter in the middle quite fleshy and behind the sweetness there is freshness the finish bright.
It is a rich, full-throttle wine, but the elegance and the great terroir of Pape Clement come through in abundance.
It is slightly more developed and evolved than the was at a similar point in its evolution, but it certainly needs another years to develop further nuances, which it surely will.
Kudos to proprietor Bernard Magrez, who has built an empire based on high quality more than any other characteristic. Bernard Magrez's flagship estate continues to produce consistently beautiful wines and that includes his sensational The fruit was harvested between September 24 and October 20, and the result is an opaque purple-colored blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that achieved Subtle notions of smoke, graphite, oak, black cherries and blackberries jump from the glass of this impressively perfumed claret.
Medium to full-bodied, strikingly elegant and less thick and intense than a structured vintage such as , the possesses remarkably sweet tannin sweeter than the as well as a full-bodied, long finish.
It should be drinkable at an early age and keep for years. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and good density, as you would expect. Whilst a little grainy in texture it feels structured with tarry black fruit, although I would have liked to see a touch more persistence on the aftertaste.
As such, leave it for another three or four years because it has a lot of potential. Tasted at the UGC in London and then at the chateau.
It has a relatively understated, again quite "classic" bouquet that is very "Graves" in style - a little earthy with hints of tobacco and cedar.
The aromatics gain some momentum in the glass, offering a black olive tapenade. The palate is medium-bodied with a very supple entry.
Again, I appreciate the acidity to this Pape Clement that binds those dusky, earthy black fruit together and then it builds nicely towards the peppery finish.
This Pape Clement effortlessly conveys its terroir - excellent. Tasted November Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. The nose is very pure with blackberry, blueberry, crushed stone and a touch of dried flowers.
Good definition. There is a slight sorbet note coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fully ripe tannins, firm grip and layers of sweet black, liquorice and spice infused fruit.
A little oaky on the finish but that is to be expected. Very rounded and sensual, but I prefer the tension demonstrated by the nascent Impressively built with medium to full-bodied flavors, it has more layers than many wines from this vintage, an appealing density and a velvety texture.
Yields were a modest 37 hectoliters per hectare and the wine finished at This acre estate has once again produced a prodigious wine in a challenging vintage.
Bravo to proprietor Bernard Magrez! Tasted from a barrel sample at en primeur. There is a lot of oak to be absorbed on the nose, although there appears to be plenty of brambly dark berry fruit to soak it up.
It is slightly broody compared to the last year and will hopefully open up after bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, plump, ripe tannins and crisp acidity.
It is harmonious and focused, good volume here, with a strict finish that displays good tension, although there is a slight dryness coming through on the aftertaste.
Tasted April This is rich and decadent with lots of wet earth, tobacco, berries and hints of cedar. Full body, round and velvety tannins and a long, long finish.
Better in This is already a gorgeous wine with spices, berries, dark chocolate and walnuts. Full body, soft and silky.
Better than The Pape Clement is one of racier, more voluptuous wines of the year. Deep, supple and flamboyant, the is laced with expressive dark stone fruit, game, cured meats and dried flowers.
This is one of the more extroverted wines of the year. It should drink well with minimal cellaring and drink well to age This is another strong from proprietor Bernard Magrez and Michel Rolland.
Very intense dark purplish crimson. Super-clean refreshing-but-ripe black fruit aromas.
