Nigeria's Super Eagles are facing a significant hurdle as they approach the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final: key player Wilfred Ndidi is suspended. This is a major blow for the team, and here's what you need to know.
The Super Eagles' recent performance has been nothing short of spectacular. They secured an early lead in the second half, thanks to Victor Osimhen, who headed in a precise cross from Bruno Onyemaechi, bringing his goal count at AFCON 2025 to four. Osimhen then turned provider, assisting Adams just ten minutes later after a brilliant pass from Alex Iwobi.
However, the path to the semi-final isn't entirely smooth. Ndidi received a yellow card in the 67th minute for time-wasting, his second booking in the knockout phase. This means he's automatically suspended for the upcoming semi-final against Morocco.
But here's where it gets controversial... The absence of Ndidi forces the team to rethink their strategy. Coach Chelle might consider Raphael Onyedika as a replacement, a move previously made against Algeria when a player was injured before receiving a yellow card.
Adding to the tension, Frank Onyeka and Calvin Bassey were also at risk of missing the semi-final if they received another yellow card against Algeria, but fortunately, they avoided further bookings.
And this is the part most people miss... There's another cause for concern: Bright Osayi-Samuel, the right-back, had to be substituted due to a late injury. Igoh Ogbu stepped in to secure a second clean sheet for the tournament.
What do you think? Will Ndidi's absence significantly impact Nigeria's chances in the semi-final? Do you agree with the referee's decision to penalize Ndidi? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
