Vikramaditya Motwane's New Project: 'Teacher's Pet' - A Fresh Take on Coming-of-Age Stories (2025)

Get ready for a heartwarming and hilarious journey with 'Teacher's Pet', a coming-of-age comedy that's about to take the film industry by storm! But here's the twist: it's not your typical Hollywood tale.

BAFTA Breakthrough Fellow Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy is stepping behind the camera to bring this unique story to life. Set in an all-girls Catholic boarding school in India, 'Teacher's Pet' promises to offer a fresh perspective on adolescence and friendship.

The film is being presented at the prestigious WAVES Film Bazaar, a part of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). With renowned filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane on board as executive producer, this project is already making waves.

Motwane, known for his work on 'Jubilee' and 'Black Warrant', is joining forces with Aishwarya Sonar's Lambe Log Productions and Shuchi Dwivedi's Small Town Gurl Productions. Together, they aim to create a film that resonates with audiences worldwide, showcasing the richness of Indian stories.

'Teacher's Pet' follows the journey of Rinky, an ambitious student with her sights set on becoming head girl. However, her path takes an unexpected turn when she finds herself in a rivalry with her former best friend. What unfolds is a chaotic yet heartfelt exploration of identity, friendship, and the universal challenges of growing up.

The creative team behind this project has a unique perspective. Having grown up searching for themselves in coming-of-age stories dominated by white protagonists, they are now determined to diversify the narrative landscape. They want to ensure that Indian stories find their place on the global stage.

Aishwarya Sonar, the producer, shares her vision: "We're committed to telling Indian stories that resonate globally. 'Teacher's Pet' allows us to delve into the chaos of teenage life from an Indian perspective. We want to be part of the change, not just for representation, but to showcase the vibrant world of Indian comedies that deserve a wider audience."

The financing for this ambitious project is being secured through a combination of private equity, international co-production partners, and non-recoupable grants. The team has already raised an impressive $200,000 and is actively engaging with new investors and production companies.

The script, written by Shuchi Dwivedi, has garnered recognition. It was shortlisted for Mubi's Cannes W Scripted programme, reached the semi-finals of the Emerging Screenwriters Comedy Competition, and won the IFFLA Pitch Competition in 2024. The project has also been part of Tasveer's Producers Lab and has been showcased at various markets, including IFFLA and CineV.

Casting is currently underway, and the production is scheduled to begin in December 2026 in Madhya Pradesh, India. Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy, with her experience directing the Kannada feature 'Aachar & Co.' and the documentary series 'Jeevalahari', is well-equipped to bring this story to the screen.

Aishwarya Sonar adds, "We have the talent and the vision. Our director has already proven her prowess, and our executive producer has been instrumental in the success of many Indian films. Now, we're seeking global partners to help us share this incredible story with audiences around the world."

'Teacher's Pet' promises to be a game-changer, offering a fresh take on coming-of-age stories. And this is the part most people miss: it's not just about representation; it's about telling compelling stories that reflect the diversity of our world. So, will 'Teacher's Pet' become a global sensation? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: this film has the potential to leave a lasting impact. What do you think? Should Indian stories like these find a bigger platform on the world stage? Let's discuss in the comments!
