The Ichizu project, designed by coil Kazuteru Matumura Architects, is a testament to the power of thoughtful renovation and the preservation of history. Located in Osaka, Japan, this project transforms two long-abandoned timber outbuildings into a shared kitchen and community space, all while respecting the site's past and its potential for the future.
What makes this project particularly fascinating is the delicate balance between preserving the past and creating a functional, modern space. The architects chose to retain the existing rusted corrugated steel cladding, a visible record of the property's history, while introducing new interventions with custom timber joinery, lauan plywood, stainless steel, and mill-scale steel. This restrained material palette creates a deliberate contrast between the old and the new, allowing both to coexist harmoniously.
The arrival sequence is a carefully crafted journey, following the property's existing organization. Visitors move between the main house and the storehouse, then emerge into a field where the renovated buildings gradually reveal themselves. This layered approach not only preserves the spatial depth of the site but also introduces new public activity into a previously private area. Today, Ichizu serves as a shared kitchen and a gathering place, while the adjacent garden and the street-side storehouse, now a shop specializing in antiques and vintage clothing, contribute to a vibrant community.
The project's name, Ichizu, meaning steadfast dedication, reflects the architects' intention to care for inherited architecture and adapt it for future generations. This is achieved through a gradual, site-specific transformation, rather than a single, large-scale intervention. The client's participation in the Ikeda Women's Network capacity-building program and the receipt of an IWN Challenge Grant further emphasize the project's broader impact and the community's support for its revitalization.
In my opinion, the Ichizu project is a brilliant example of how architecture can be both a preservationist and a catalyst for community engagement.
