Raphael's Jitte: A Creative Journey
Today, we're diving into some card previews that require a bit of context. If you're a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you're likely familiar with their unique weapons. So, when you see Raphael with a jitte instead of his usual sai, it might raise some questions.
A Creative Collaboration:
These card designs are a result of a creative partnership with Nickelodeon. Our team was thrilled to bring our own twist to the TMNT universe, drawing inspiration from the beloved characters and their rich history.
Exploring Family Dynamics:
At the heart of the TMNT lies a tight-knit family navigating extraordinary circumstances. We focused on the relationships and dynamics within this family, asking ourselves: How do these American kids relate to their father's Japanese heritage? What lessons have they learned? What do they hold onto and reject?
Visual Storytelling:
In our design process, we emphasized the brothers' unique personalities through their costumes. Mikey's backpack-like straps and Raph's distinct mask reflect their individual traits. This attention to detail helps convey their distinct personalities.
Weapons and Cultural Heritage:
When it came to weapons, we drew inspiration from the original Mirage comics and animated versions. Splinter, the traditionally Japanese character, taught his sons traditional ninja weapons. Leonardo got the ninjatō, Donatello the bō, Raphael the jitte, and Michelangelo the kusarigama. However, we wanted to showcase how these teenagers embrace their NYC upbringing.
Emotional Relationships:
Raphael and Splinter share a unique bond, marked by anger and patience. Splinter aims to teach Raph to control his rage, while Raph strives for his father's pride. This dynamic is a central theme, and we wanted to visually represent it.
The Jitte's Significance:
By choosing the jitte over the sai, we highlight the importance of the father-son relationship. Raph's insistence on using the jitte, despite it not fitting his fighting style, symbolizes his connection to his father's teachings. This subtle detail adds depth to the character's development.
Michelangelo's Unique Choice:
We also considered making Mikey's weapon unconventional, reflecting his role as the 'weird' kid. While we ultimately decided on the kusarigama, this decision adds to the character's unique personality.
In the end, this creative direction allows us to explore the complex relationships and personalities of the TMNT, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved franchise.
