The story of Sterling Betancourt, a Trinidadian musician who brought steelpan music to the UK, is a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the enduring impact of a humble, dedicated artist. Betancourt's journey began in Port of Spain, Trinidad, where he was born in 1930. As a child, he discovered his passion for music by experimenting with empty tins and milk cans, creating rhythms and singing. This early interest in music was a precursor to his later mastery of the steelpan, an instrument crafted from oil drums. The Second World War brought the US Navy to Trinidad, and with it, the opportunity to repurpose discarded oil drums into musical instruments. Betancourt's talent for creating these unique instruments from waste materials was a skill he honed as a teenager, playing them on the streets of Trinidad. However, the steelpan was not without its controversies. Steelpan bands were often associated with gangs and poor neighborhoods, leading to brawls at competitions. Yet, the formation of the Steelbands Association of Trinidad and Tobago in 1949 helped to professionalize the movement and reduce rivalries between bands. It was this association that selected 11 of the best pan musicians, including Betancourt, to represent Trinidad at the Festival of Britain in 1951. The Festival of Britain was a government-funded celebration of British and Commonwealth cultural excellence, and it was there that Betancourt and his bandmates, playing with rusty steelpans around their necks, captivated a sceptical audience with their beautiful music. The impact of this performance was profound, introducing a new and mellifluous style of music to the UK that has since been passed down from generation to generation. Betancourt's passion for music and his dedication to teaching others were evident in his patience and encouragement of students, even those with no natural talent. He continued to build his own instruments from oil drums, even after returning to Trinidad, and his influence spread across Britain, continental Europe, and Asia. In the 1970s, he played in Singapore, Dubai, Oman, Abu Dhabi, Spain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, performing on barges in the river. Betancourt's commitment to cultural exchange was further demonstrated by his involvement in the Notting Hill Carnival, which he helped to establish in 1959. He led a steelpan walkabout around the area, which later became the basis for the carnival, celebrating its 60th anniversary in August. Betancourt's musical contributions extended beyond the steelpan, as he recorded sessions with jazz, pop, reggae, and soca musicians. In 2018, he recorded 'Brexit Bacchanal Story,' a calypso-flavoured lament about the UK's decision to leave the EU, reflecting his strong views on the matter. Despite his lack of fame in the traditional sense, Betancourt's impact on British music and his dedication to his craft are undeniable. His passing in 2024, at the age of 96, marked the end of an era for Windrush-era musicians who changed the DNA of British music. The Southbank Centre's Steel Scenes festival, which will take place later this month, will pay homage to Betancourt's legacy, featuring 500 pan musicians and contemporary British artists who have composed new music for the steelpan. The festival will also include Betancourt, the last surviving member of the original 11-strong Taspo lineup, who, despite his frail health, contributed a melody line for the young bands to develop. Sterling Betancourt's life and work exemplify the transformative power of music and the enduring impact of a dedicated artist. His story serves as a reminder that cultural exchange and the preservation of traditional art forms are essential for the enrichment of societies worldwide.
