A groundbreaking collaboration is set to revolutionize Taiwan's energy landscape!
On December 8, 2025, a remarkable joint venture (JV) between Danish powerhouse NKT and Taiwanese cable specialist Walsin Lihwa culminated in the inauguration of Taiwan's inaugural offshore power cable factory. This facility, operated by Walsin Energy Cable System (WECS), is a testament to the power of international cooperation and a significant step towards a greener future.
But what makes this factory so special? Spanning an impressive 231,000 square meters in Kaohsiung, it boasts a towering 50-meter extrusion tower. This cutting-edge facility is dedicated to producing high- and medium-voltage AC offshore power cables, primarily catering to Taiwan's burgeoning offshore wind market.
"This is more than just a factory opening; it's a symbol of our shared ambition," proclaimed Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT. "WECS is the result of a successful fusion of our companies' expertise, culture, and vision." Westerlind emphasized the significance of this venture, stating, "Together, we're accelerating Taiwan's clean energy transition and fortifying its critical infrastructure."
And here's where it gets even more exciting: this factory is Taiwan's first localized submarine cable production site, marking the nation's entry into the offshore cable manufacturing arena. NKT proudly highlights this achievement, stating, "We're honored to contribute to Taiwan's journey towards energy autonomy and net-zero emissions."
Commercial production is set to commence in 2027, following rigorous testing and prequalification processes. Yu-Lon Chiao, Chairman of WECS, expressed his enthusiasm: "Our partnership with NKT has been invaluable, allowing us to construct this factory at record speed. This collaboration is a win-win, offering new opportunities for both parties in the Asia-Pacific market while advancing Taiwan's green energy goals."
The journey began in February 2023 when the joint venture was announced, followed by the signing of agreements in March. The groundbreaking ceremony in September 2023 marked a significant milestone in this ambitious project.
This development is a powerful example of how international partnerships can drive innovation and sustainability. But it also raises questions: How will this factory impact Taiwan's energy independence? What does this mean for the future of offshore wind power? And will this venture influence other countries to follow suit? Share your thoughts below, and let's explore the possibilities together!
