SpaceX Vets Launch Mesh Optical: Revolutionizing Data Center Links with $50M Funding (2026)

A bold vision for the future of data centers has just received a major boost. Three former SpaceX engineers, Travis Brashears, Cameron Ramos, and Serena Grown-Haeberli, have raised an impressive $50 million Series A to revolutionize optical communications. Their startup, Mesh Optical Technologies, aims to transform how we connect and power large-scale AI models.

But here's where it gets controversial: they're taking on the dominance of Chinese firms in the optical transceiver market.

The team's expertise in optical communications began at SpaceX, where they developed links to keep Starlink satellites connected. Now, they're applying that knowledge to data centers, recognizing a critical need for more efficient and powerful transceivers.

Optical transceivers are the unsung heroes of data centers, enabling multiple GPUs to work together seamlessly. As AI models grow larger and more complex, the demand for these transceivers skyrockets. One U.S. supplier, AOI, recently secured a $4 billion contract to provide components for AWS data centers, highlighting the scale of this market.

"When you hear about a million GPU cluster, the number of transceivers needed is four to five times that," explains Brashears.

Mesh Optical Technologies aims to mass-produce these transceivers, with a goal of manufacturing a thousand units daily within the year. They plan to qualify for bulk orders in 2027 and 2028, a bold move that could disrupt the market.

The current optical transceiver market is dominated by Chinese suppliers, but Mesh sees an opportunity to build a more secure supply chain outside of China. While trade restrictions haven't impacted the market yet, the founders and their investors are taking a proactive approach to national security.

"If AI is indeed the most important technology of our generation (as we believe), having critical parts of AI data center infrastructure controlled by misaligned or competitive countries is a significant concern," writes Philip Clark, partner at Thrive Capital, the lead investor in Mesh's Series A.

The challenge for Mesh lies in implementing automated, lights-out manufacturing techniques, an expertise largely concentrated in China. Even European equipment suppliers expect Chinese customers, highlighting the scale of this expertise gap.

By co-locating design and production, Mesh hopes to create more efficient and cost-effective components. Their current design removes a power-hungry component, potentially reducing GPU cluster power usage by 3% to 5%, a significant gain for hyperscalers seeking maximum efficiency.

But Mesh's aspirations go beyond data centers. They see optical wavelength communications as the future of connectivity.

"The world has primarily focused on radio frequencies for a long time," says Brashears. "We want to lead the transition from RF to photonics. We aim to interconnect everything, not just computers, and we're starting with data centers."

This ambitious vision has caught the attention of investors and industry experts alike. He believes Mesh's work could have a significant impact on the future of AI and data centers.
