Are you a game developer struggling to find the right publishing partner or investor? You're not alone. Navigating the complex world of game publishing can feel like wandering through a maze blindfolded. But what if there was a tool that could guide you through this labyrinth, making the process not only easier but also surprisingly fun? Enter Publisher Pathfinder, a revolutionary new resource designed to connect developers with the perfect publishing partners and investors for their projects.
Styled as a nostalgic, old-school text adventure game, Publisher Pathfinder transforms the daunting task of finding the right collaborators into an engaging journey. Here’s how it works: Developers answer a series of questions about their game—think target platforms, content type, and funding needs—and the tool uses this information to curate a list of ideal matches from its extensive database of nearly 800 companies. And this is the part most people miss: It’s not just about publishers; the tool also connects you with investors and service providers, making it a one-stop shop for all your publishing needs.
The brainchild of games industry veteran Alyssa Kollgaard, now COO of Akupara Games, Publisher Pathfinder was inspired by her experience leading The Indie Houses, a publisher collective that includes heavyweights like Raw Fury and Fellow Traveller. Kollgaard recalls, ‘It was such a rewarding experience sharing knowledge and resources as part of a unified team. Someone once jokingly suggested creating a ‘sorting hat’ website for Indie House publishers, and the idea stuck with me. I decided to expand it to all publishers, giving it a unique theme that’s not tied to any existing franchise, because I truly believe it will be a game-changer for the community.’
But here’s where it gets controversial: In an industry where transparency is often lacking, Publisher Pathfinder aims to demystify the opaque world of game funding. Kollgaard spent months compiling and verifying data from multiple sources, including Alan’s Gamedev Resources Sheet, Seyed’s Publisher & Investor Database, and IndieGameBusiness. She even added her own criteria, such as publisher pillars and additional services, along with insights from senior industry leaders. ‘It was incredibly challenging,’ she admits. ‘It took me about 100 hours over five months to fill in the gaps using publicly available, verifiable information. But the result is a resource that’s as meticulously crafted as the games themselves.’
Kollgaard’s vision is clear: ‘The game-publishing ecosystem deserves as much clarity, craft, and design thinking as the games it supports. I’ve been in the trenches, and I know how overwhelming it can be. Publisher Pathfinder is my way of cutting through the noise, making game funding more transparent, actionable, and—dare I say—fun!’
