New Sunscreen Ingredient Bemotrizinol: What You Need to Know | FDA Proposal Explained (2026)

Sunscreen Regulation Update: Bemotrizinol May Soon Be Approved for Use in the United States

In a move that could broaden the options available to American sunscreen users, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering allowing a widely used ingredient from Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia—Bemotrizinol—as an active sunscreen component.

Experts suggest that Bemotrizinol, which provides broad-spectrum protection, could offer superior defense against both UVA and UVB rays compared with many sunscreens currently approved in the U.S.

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary criticized the United States for what he described as a slower pace in embracing new sunscreen technologies, especially when compared with other countries.

Under the proposed rule, manufacturers could include Bemotrizinol at concentrations up to 6% in their sunscreen products.

“Historically, the agency has moved too slowly in this area, leaving Americans with fewer options than consumers abroad,” Makary stated in an FDA release. He added that Americans deserve timely access to the safest, most effective, and user-friendly over-the-counter products available.

Karen Murry, the acting director of the US Office of Nonprescription Drugs, described the inclusion of Bemotrizinol as a welcoming development for U.S. consumers.

“We anticipate collaborating with other companies to bring products containing additional new active ingredients to market for a broader range of conditions and in multiple therapeutic areas, in a much more timely manner than in the past,” she remarked.

Understanding how sunscreens work can help you choose wisely: mineral sunscreens create a thin, protective film on the skin that blocks or reflects UV radiation, whereas chemical sunscreens absorb UV light and release it as heat.

Beyond sunscreen use, protecting your skin involves more than just applying lotion. Regularly applying sunscreen reduces skin cancer risk and helps prevent premature aging. Health authorities in the U.K. have highlighted that many people don’t apply enough sunscreen, underscoring the importance of complementary protective measures such as sunglasses, clothing that covers the skin, and a broad-brimmed hat.

Skin cancer remains the most common form of cancer in the United States. CDC statistics indicate that roughly 6.1 million adults receive treatment annually for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.

What this potential regulatory change could mean for you: a greater variety of effective products on the market, potentially improved UV protection, and a more competitive landscape for sun-care options. But it also invites debate about safety testing, long-term effects, and consumer education. Do you think Bemotrizinol belongs in U.S. sunscreens, or should the current lineup remain as is?
