A shocking incident on Thika Road: A 33-seater matatu reduced to ashes by an enraged mob. On November 2, 2025, near Juja town, a tragic accident unfolded, sparking immediate and destructive consequences. A pedestrian was fatally struck by a matatu, leading to an eruption of mob violence.
According to reports, the driver of the 33-seater minibus lost control, resulting in the death of a pedestrian. Witness accounts describe the scene as chaotic, with angry residents and boda boda riders quickly converging on the vehicle. The driver was reportedly pulled from the matatu, and the vehicle was set ablaze.
One eyewitness stated, "The crowd was furious. They accused the driver of speeding and ignoring traffic rules." The police arrived on the scene too late to prevent the destruction. The passengers aboard the matatu were able to escape unharmed. Videos circulating on social media captured the dramatic scene, with thick smoke billowing from the burning vehicle. Firefighters were eventually called to extinguish the flames, but the matatu was completely destroyed.
This incident caused a major traffic jam on the busy Nairobi–Thika highway. Motorists were forced to find alternative routes as Juja Police Station officers cordoned off the area and began gathering witness statements. The driver, who sustained minor injuries, was taken into custody for questioning.
This event has reignited the debate surrounding mob justice in Kenya. Civil rights groups and transport sector unions have consistently condemned such actions, emphasizing their detrimental impact on justice and public safety. A Kiambu County police commander stated, "This kind of lawlessness only leads to more tragedy."
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has also condemned these acts, reminding the public that taking the law into their own hands is a criminal offense. They urge both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, noting that Kiambu County has a high rate of road accidents.
But here's where it gets controversial... This recent event is part of a troubling pattern of mob violence. Just two months prior, a similar incident occurred along the Thika Superhighway, where a Super Metro bus was set ablaze after hitting a boda rider. This happened on September 1, 2025. The bus allegedly swerved to avoid a tuk-tuk, and the resulting accident led to outrage from boda boda riders, who confronted the driver before setting the bus on fire. Super Metro expressed remorse to the victim's family.
And this is the part most people miss... Similar incidents have also occurred in Nairobi, with buses being burned following accidents involving boda bodas. These events have prompted calls for stricter regulation of the boda boda industry, with many pointing to indiscipline as a major factor.
