It's a tough pill to swallow when a team's Super Bowl dreams are shattered, and the weight of that disappointment can be crushing. After a brutal overtime loss in the divisional round of the playoffs, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was visibly distraught, offering a heartfelt apology to his teammates. The Denver Broncos emerged victorious with a 33-30 win, marking their first playoff victory in 11 years and propelling them into the AFC Championship game.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Broncos will be without their quarterback, Bo Nix, for the AFC title game due to a season-ending ankle injury. This adds another layer of complexity to an already emotional situation.
Allen, overwhelmed with emotion, faced reporters after the game, stating, "It's extremely difficult. I feel like I let my teammates down." His performance included four costly turnovers, which significantly impacted the game's outcome.
The Broncos secured the game-winning field goal in overtime after a series of scoreless drives. However, a controversial play involving a pass from Allen to Bills WR Brandin Cooks became a major talking point. Denver defensive back Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted the pass after initially being caught by Cooks. Officials ruled that Cooks didn't maintain full control of the ball as he hit the ground, leading to the interception. This decision sparked debate, with former NFL QB Tony Romo calling it "unique." CBS's NFL rules expert, Gene Steratore, supported the call, ruling it a Broncos interception.
In the subsequent drive, Denver advanced with the help of two pass interference calls. An emotional Bills CB Tre White was penalized, setting the stage for Denver to move inside Buffalo’s 10-yard line. Denver kicker Wil Lutz then sealed the win with a field goal.
Earlier in the game, the Broncos took the lead in the final minute of regulation with a touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Marvin Mims. Allen responded by driving his team into field goal range, where Matt Prater kicked a 50-yard field goal to force overtime.
Allen's performance was a mixed bag. He accumulated 349 total yards and three touchdowns but also committed four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumbles). One particularly costly turnover occurred right before halftime when Allen made a questionable decision to throw the ball backward with no timeouts, resulting in the Broncos recovering the fumble and kicking a field goal. This extended their lead to 10 points.
Broncos quarterback Bo Nix finished with 26 completions out of 46 attempts, 279 yards, and three touchdowns.
