Surprise! The highly anticipated Hollow Knight - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches today!
Update [Thu 5th Feb 2026, 2:15pm]: Although the earlier PEGI rating may have unintentionally revealed this exciting news, the latest Nintendo Direct has officially confirmed that Hollow Knight - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch-2/hollow-knight-nintendo-switch-2-edition) is indeed becoming available today!
If you weren’t aware from our previous post (detailed below), players who own the original Switch version will receive this as a complimentary upgrade. This updated edition promises enhanced graphics, improved frame rates, and much more.
Original Story: Back in December, it was announced (https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/12/hollow-knight-silksong-expansion-coming-2026-hollow-knight-switch-2-edition-also-announced) that the beloved game Hollow Knight (https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/hollow_knight) would soon have its own version tailored for the Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2026. True to Team Cherry’s style, there had been little to no communication since then. However, a recent PEGI rating might indicate that the release is closer than we anticipated (thanks to Nintendo Everything (https://nintendoeverything.com/hollow-knight-nintendo-switch-2-edition-announced/)).
The official PEGI website (https://pegi.info/search-pegi?q=Hollow+Knight) has added the Nintendo Switch 2 to the platform list for Hollow Knight, maintaining the original game’s age rating of '7'. This rating is based on the presence of "mild violence towards fantasy characters and imagery or sounds that could be frightening for young children." This classification isn’t surprising at all for those who have ventured into Deepnest—just the thought sends shivers down the spine!
It’s also noteworthy that the Switch 2 version comes with a specific release date of February 5, 2026. Yes, that’s today!
Of course, there's a possibility that this could just be a coincidence, and we might actually have to wait several months before we can return to Hallownest. PEGI ratings sometimes appear unexpectedly with a 'release date' that reflects when the rating was issued, rather than when a game actually becomes available—take Hi-Fi Rush (https://www.pushsquare.com/games/ps5/hi-fi_rush) as an example, which had a Switch date listed as January 15 (https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2026/01/hi-fi-rush-has-been-rated-for-the-switch-again) just last month.
However, we can't overlook the fact that there’s a Partner Direct (https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2026/02/nintendo-direct-partner-showcase-announced-for-today-5th-february-2026) scheduled for today, which raises the possibility of a shadow drop for this game.
We’ll have to patiently wait and see what the showcase reveals. For those wondering, Team Cherry has assured fans that the Hollow Knight - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition will feature "high frame-rate modes, higher resolutions, and numerous additional graphical effects." Plus, existing owners of the original Switch version will benefit from this free upgrade.
Additionally, we're also looking forward to the Hollow Knight: Silksong (https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/hollowknightsilksong) expansion titled "Sea of Sorrow" (https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch-2/hollow-knight-silksong-sea-of-sorrow) that is set to launch sometime this year. While Team Cherry has kept many details under wraps since its announcement back in December, they did tease new areas, bosses, tools, and much more.
