Colorectal Cancer Trial in Telford Receives Extended Funding
The groundbreaking trial for colorectal cancer testing in Telford has received a significant boost in funding, allowing it to continue its life-changing work. This initiative, a collaboration between the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) and Origin Sciences, a medical technology company, is making waves in the healthcare industry.
Since its inception in December 2024, nearly 2,000 patients have participated in this innovative study. The trial's ambitious goal is to reach 6,600 participants by June 2026, marking a significant milestone in the fight against colorectal cancer.
At the heart of this trial is a non-invasive, quick, and pain-free test. It utilizes a device called Oricol, which collects rectal mucus samples for analysis. These samples are then tested for abnormal cells and significant polyps, providing valuable insights into a patient's colorectal health.
While the test cannot definitively diagnose cancer, it plays a crucial role in guiding further medical decisions. Patients with positive results are advised to undergo a colonoscopy in a hospital setting. This approach ensures that those at risk are promptly identified and managed.
The SaTH team is optimistic about the trial's potential impact. They predict that eight out of ten patients will receive reassurance within five days of the test, indicating that they do not have cancer. This rapid feedback is a game-changer for patients, reducing anxiety and enabling quicker decision-making.
Colorectal cancer is a prevalent issue in the UK, affecting approximately 42,000 individuals annually. The SaTH trust, in particular, encounters around 350 colorectal cancer cases each year. By accelerating the diagnosis process and enabling earlier detection, this trial has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden on the healthcare system.
Jenni Rowlands, deputy medical director at SaTH, highlights the trial's positive effects: "This trial is already having a huge impact on our patients as they are being seen at their first outpatient appointment much quicker."
