Over 1,200 New Dengue Cases in Pakistan's Sindh Province: A Growing Health Crisis
The southern region of Pakistan's Sindh province is grappling with a severe dengue fever outbreak, with over 1,200 new cases reported on Tuesday alone. This alarming surge has led to a total of 27 fatalities since October, according to local health authorities. The situation is particularly dire in the provincial capital, Karachi, where a 30-year-old man succumbed to dengue fever at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital and Research Center.
Health officials revealed that out of 7,548 individuals tested for dengue in the past 24 hours, a staggering 1,212 tested positive. This recent spike has pushed the province's dengue tally for November to 7,173, and the cumulative cases for the year to 12,750. The current treatment landscape includes 257 patients in public hospitals and 176 in private facilities.
Health experts are urging the provincial government to take swift action by declaring a health emergency in the most affected areas and implementing urgent mosquito control measures. They also emphasize the need for an independent audit of the dengue control program and enhanced accountability in municipal services to address this growing health crisis effectively.
