The electric vehicle market in China is a whirlwind of change, and the latest numbers from BYD paint a complex picture. While BYD remains a dominant force, the December sales figures reveal a significant dip. But what does this mean for the future of EVs in China? Let's dive in.

In December, BYD's deliveries took a hit, dropping to 414,784 units, a decrease from 474,921 in November. This downturn occurred amidst a fierce price war and weakened domestic demand, signaling a challenging landscape for EV manufacturers. However, despite this stumble, BYD still managed to lead the pack in overall sales for 2025.

BYD, despite lowering its sales target by 16% to 4.6 million vehicles, ultimately delivered over 4.54 million passenger vehicles throughout 2025. This represents a 6.94% increase compared to 2024, solidifying its position as the market leader. This is a significant achievement, especially when compared to Tesla's performance in China.

Tesla, for instance, recorded 735,274 wholesale deliveries of its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles in China between January and November. December's figures are still pending, but the contrast highlights BYD's substantial lead.

But here's where it gets controversial... The rise of affordable EV models is shaking up the industry. Startups are gaining ground, often outperforming premium brands with their mass-market offerings and competitive pricing strategies.

Leapmotor is a prime example of this trend, experiencing rapid growth with 596,555 deliveries in 2025, exceeding its initial target. The company almost doubled its sales volume from the previous year and is aiming for 1 million EV deliveries in 2026.

Xpeng also saw a substantial increase, with 429,445 sales in 2025 – a 126% jump from 2024. The launch of its Mona series in September played a key role in boosting sales, peaking in September and October.

Nio's deliveries reached 326,028 cars in 2025, a 46.9% year-on-year increase. Notably, about half of these deliveries were attributed to its premium brand. Nio also set a record for the fastest deliveries among EVs priced above 400,000 yuan (approximately $57,172), with its flagship SUV, the ES8.

Even smartphone giant Xiaomi made waves, recording over 50,000 sales in December and surpassing 380,000 car deliveries for the year.

And this is the part most people miss... Not all companies followed the same trajectory. Li Auto, for example, saw a decline in 2025, delivering 406,343 vehicles. However, it showed signs of recovery in December, with sales exceeding 40,000 units for the first time since May, following a marketing setback earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, the Huawei-backed Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance, which includes brands like Aito, Chery, and Maextro, showed strong momentum. It delivered about 589,107 vehicles in 2025, a 32% year-on-year increase, with December marking its third consecutive month of record deliveries.
