A tragic terror attack unfolded at Bondi Beach, leaving a trail of devastation and unanswered questions. The alleged gunman, Sajid Akram, met his end at the hands of police, but his family back in India remains oblivious to the alleged radical mindset that drove him to such extreme actions.
Akram, a native of Hyderabad, India, had seemingly left no trace of his radical beliefs with his family. Indian police confirmed that his relatives expressed no knowledge of his extremist tendencies, and local authorities had no record of any such behavior during his time in India.
The second alleged gunman, Akram's son Naveed, remains hospitalized after also being shot by police. He is in critical condition, and authorities are considering pressing charges as early as today.
The attack claimed the lives of fifteen innocent individuals, making it Australia's deadliest mass shooting in nearly three decades. It targeted a Hanukah event, an act of terrorism aimed at the Jewish community.
The first funerals for the victims will take place on Wednesday, including those of Rabbi Eli Schlanger and Rabbi Yaakov Levitan. Schlanger worked at the Chabad of Bondi, the very place that hosted the tragic Chanukah by the Sea event.
Twenty-two people wounded in the attack are still receiving treatment in hospitals across Sydney. Three are in critical condition, five are stable but still critical, and the rest are in a stable state.
According to police in Telangana, India, Akram, aged 50, had a degree in commerce from Hyderabad. He moved to Australia in 1998 to seek employment and married a woman of European descent, with whom he had a son and a daughter.
Akram returned to India six times for family matters and to visit his parents, but he did not return for his father's funeral. Indian police stated that his family seemed unaware of any radicalization, and they had no adverse record of him prior to his departure in 1998.
Australian police revealed that Akram and his son had traveled to the Philippines last month. The purpose of their trip is still under investigation, and authorities are yet to confirm any links to terrorist groups or training in that country.
The youngest victim of the terror attack, 10-year-old Matilda, was named as such by her parents because she was their firstborn in Australia. Her devastated parents, Michael and Valentyna, immigrants from Ukraine, shared their heartbreak at a memorial held at Bondi Beach.
"I couldn't imagine I would lose my daughter here," Valentyna said, breaking down in front of the crowd.
Other victims of this senseless attack include Holocaust survivor Alexander Kleytman, 87, and dedicated community volunteer Marika Pogany, 82, who met her end on her beloved Bondi Beach. Three brave individuals who tried to stop the shooting also lost their lives: Boris and Sofia Gurman, who attempted to disarm one of the gunmen, and Reuven Morrison, who courageously threw bricks at Sajid Akram.
This tragedy has left a deep scar on the community, and the investigation into the attack and its motives continues.
