Arctic Blast Shuts Down Major UK Road: A Wintery Tale of Travel Woes
An Arctic blast has brought a blanket of snow and ice to Scotland and northern England, causing a major road across the Pennines to close. This has sparked widespread travel disruption, leaving many facing a challenging journey.
The Met Office issued two yellow warnings, highlighting the potential dangers of the cold weather. With temperatures dropping, a four-day health alert was declared, emphasizing the risks to vulnerable individuals.
In Scotland, the warning is for heavy snow showers, with accumulations of up to 10cm on high ground. Freezing conditions could make driving hazardous, and longer journey times are expected.
Northern England is also facing a mix of rain, sleet, and snow, leading to slippery conditions and potential disruptions to public transport. On higher ground, above 300 meters, up to 10cm of snow is predicted.
The A66, a key road across the Pennines, was closed on Friday morning due to concentrated snowfall. National Highways crews are working tirelessly to clear and treat the road, but the snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Arctic maritime air mass is bringing colder temperatures, leading to yellow alerts for cold weather across northern England and the Midlands. These alerts highlight the increased risk to life for vulnerable people and the potential strain on healthcare services.
And this is the part most people miss... The wintry weather follows an unusually wet start to 2026 for large parts of the UK. Some areas, like Devon, Cornwall, and Worcestershire, experienced rain for an astonishing 40 days straight!
On Friday, England faced 76 flood warnings and 154 flood alerts, while Wales had four flood alerts in place. For others, like Aberdeen, it was a lack of sunshine, with 21 days of sunless weather until a brief glimpse of the sun on Thursday afternoon.
While Friday was a chilly and tricky day for many, there's a glimmer of hope for better weather ahead. Marco Petagna, a Met Office forecaster, predicts Saturday will be "the best day we've seen for some time" with plenty of sunshine across the UK. Although temperatures will be cooler than average, the sunshine will make up for it.
