AI in Game Development: Can it Replace Human Creativity? (2025)

AI in Gaming: A Tool to Enhance, Not Replace Creativity

The director of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, has shared his thoughts on the role of AI in game development. In an interview with Eurogamer, Tomaszkiewicz discussed his new studio, Rebel Wolves, and their approach to using AI technology.

Tomaszkiewicz believes that AI has a place in the development process, but it should not be seen as a replacement for human creativity. He explains that AI can be a valuable tool to assist in the creative process, especially during the testing phase of game development. For instance, his studio used AI to test voice lines for the upcoming RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker, which helped them understand the impact of the voices early on.

However, Tomaszkiewicz emphasizes that AI should not take the place of human artists. He compares AI to Google Translate, a tool that helps us, but does not steal our creative rights. He believes that games created solely by AI will lack the soul and emotional depth that human creativity brings.

Tomaszkiewicz's perspective is rooted in his extensive experience at CD Projekt, where he worked on all three Witcher titles and rose to the position of VP of game development. His departure from the studio in 2021 led to the founding of Rebel Wolves, which secured investment from NetEase later that year. This move showcases his belief in the potential of AI as a collaborative tool, rather than a replacement for human talent.

The discussion highlights the ongoing debate about AI's role in the creative industries. While AI can enhance and streamline certain aspects of game development, the human touch remains essential for creating truly immersive and emotionally resonant experiences.
