Abingdon Reservoir: Extended Feedback Period for the Thames Water Project (2026)

A crucial public consultation on a proposed reservoir project has been extended, offering a second chance for those with comprehensive feedback. The future of water supply for millions hangs in the balance.

The Thames Water project, a massive undertaking near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, aims to provide water for 15 million people. With a size comparable to Gatwick Airport and a price tag of up to £7.5 billion, it's a significant development.

But here's where it gets controversial... An online glitch prevented some participants from submitting their detailed responses, prompting Thames Water to extend the consultation period and accept feedback via email until 23 January.

The reservoir, known as the South East Strategic Reservoir Option, would be filled during the winter months when the River Thames has an abundance of water. This water would then be supplied to local homes and businesses across London and the South East, including customers of Affinity Water and Southern Water.

And this is the part most people miss... The water company plans to release water back into the river when levels drop or demand increases, ensuring a sustainable and reliable water source.

However, there's a catch. Customers of the involved water companies will bear the cost of this project through their bills. Thames Water believes this reservoir is vital for addressing future water shortages, but it's a significant financial commitment for residents.

The water company aims to apply for government planning consent in autumn 2026, with construction starting in 2032 and the reservoir becoming operational by 2040, fully completed by 2043.

So, what do you think? Is this reservoir project a necessary step towards securing our water supply, or is it a costly and controversial solution? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let's discuss the future of our water infrastructure!
